From great take out to killer happy hours, American Mary’s neighborhood has plenty to offer. But did you know that along with being the closest recreational dispensary to the University of Washington, we’re also just a stone’s throw from Fremont, the unquestioned Center of the Universe?
OK, while Neil Degrasse Tyson might have something to say about that pesky celestial center claim, during the annual Fremont Solstice, it sure feels like everything rotates around Fremont. And while the most famous part of the funky festival might be the huge mass of the naked bicycle riders which plunge down Fremont Avenue to kick off the Solstice Parade, there’s plenty to do even if you prefer your cyclists clad in something other than body paint.
The Fremont Fair runs in concert with the solstice festival, and features a multitude of activities which celebrate the neighborhood’s funky vibe, including a sunrise yoga session, an art car show and a dog parade. Of course, there will also be loads of booths filled with artisan crafts, along with plenty of delicious food vendors. So if you’re looking to find your pop a unique, last-minute Father’s Day gift while chowing down on some of Seattle’s best street food, you’d be hard pressed for a better way to spend an afternoon.
Music fans will definitely want to head to Redhook Main Stage to catch Northwest favorites like indie rockers the Helio Sequence, folk duo Luluc, and Seattle’s own Hey Marseilles. The local five-piece is currently receiving reams of positive press for its new self-titled release, which enlisted veteran producer Anthony Kilhoffer, famous for his work with Kanye West, Rihanna and the Black Eyed Peas. The best part? All the performances are free.
Of course, if you’re looking for anything to help magnify the surreal moments of the Fremont Solstice, or just help with your fear of crowds, American Mary’s friendly neighborhood budtenders will be standing by.
The Fremont Solstice runs from Friday, June 17th to Sunday June 19th. Check out the official page for more a complete breakdown of all performances and events.
